How it Works
The Consultation
At RL Center for Cosmetic Surgery & Medspa, each initial patient consultation is different. Depending on your needs, desired treatments, areas of concern, and simply who you are as a patient, we will schedule you with an actual treatment provider to discuss your goals, budget, and more. During this appointment, we will go through before & after photos, your medical history, and any questions you might have. Only then can we make a recommendation for which procedures or treatments may be right for you and why. We will be sure to educate you on how the treatments work, including what to expect during and afterward.
We charge $100 for surgical consultations that last about 40 minutes. At the end of your consultation, you will leave our office in Vernon Hills with a thorough, personalized treatment plan. And when you’re ready, we’ll schedule your surgery for a day and time that works for your schedule.
The Procedure
An otoplasty is an outpatient procedure that takes about one to two hours and the patient will be placed under local or general anesthesia throughout the entire time. The procedure involves making an incision in the hidden crease behind the ear, and then the cartilage is reshaped with sutures. This recreates the antihelical fold. The ear is then naturally “pinned” back with sutures to the mastoid process, which is the bony prominence behind the ear. The incisions are stitched up and the sutures dissolve on their own in 1-2 weeks. This results in a less protruding, natural looking ear. A compressive head dressing is placed
The Recovery
Before any cosmetic surgery, including an otoplasty in Chicago and Vernon Hills, IL, your surgeon will review your recovery schedule in detail so you feel prepared for what to expect afterwards. An Otoplasty is an outpatient procedure that we perform in our surgical facility, which means you’ll be able to go home the same day. In general, you’ll still be experiencing the effects of the anesthesia when you arrive home. Therefore, it’s important to have someone who can drive you home and take care of you for the first 24 hours following your otoplasty Your surgeon will send you home with both instructions for your recovery and supplies that will help your otoplasty heal correctly.
A headband like dressing will be place to prevent the ear from pulling forward in order to avoid disrupting the internal sutures that are recreating the antihelical fold of the ear and “pinning” the ear back towards the head. Eventually, the body will deposit scar tissue to “lock in” the new contour of the ear. During this process, the patient will be advised to refrain from vigorous activity. This period of time varies but is approximately 4-6 weeks. A brief course of prescription pain medication is followed by Tylenol/ibuprofen within a couple of days.
It’s important that you rest for the first few days of your recovery after a otoplasty. Recovery times vary by patient, making it important to follow your specific recovery instructions. The results of your procedure should be noticeable soon after the procedure, and the results should last for the rest of your life!
