Getting Breast Implants

A typical breast augmentation procedure will last between one to two hours and is performed under general anesthesia.

Your surgeon will make your incision of choice and use the Keller Funnel™️ device to ensure a sterile placement of your implant. Saline implants can be deflated and inserted through the body through much smaller incisions, then filled once placed in the body. Silicone gel implants come already filled, so you will typically require a slightly larger incision to place the implant. Both saline breast implants and silicone gel breast implants have unique advantages and things to consider, so it’s best to speak with your plastic surgeon to decide the right choice of breast implant.

Fat Transfer to the Breasts

In some cases, fat transfer can be performed for breast augmentation, without the use of breast implants.

This is performed by liposuction to harvest fat, preparation of the fat by washing and filtering the fat, and then grafting the fat into the breasts. The advantages of this approach are that no implants are involved and the fat can be targeted to specific areas of the breast. The disadvantages are that there can be a variable amount of fat take, there is a limit to how much fat can be grafted in any one surgery, and the patient must have adequate fat stores to harvest for the fat transfer.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

Before any cosmetic surgery, your surgeon will review your recovery schedule in detail so you feel prepared for what to expect afterwards.

Breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure that we perform in our surgical facility, which means you’ll be able to go home the same day.  Pain is managed by a combination of local anesthetic nerve blocks performed at the time of surgery and oral pain medications as needed

In general, you’ll still be experiencing the effects of the anesthesia when you arrive home. Therefore, it’s important to have someone who can drive you home and take care of you for the first 24 hours following your breast augmentation. Your surgeon will send you home with both instructions for your recovery and supplies that will help your breast augmentation heal correctly.

It’s important that you rest for the first few days of your recovery after a breast augmentation. You should avoid lifting heavy objects or undergoing strenuous activity for the first week of your recovery.
