Introduction to Facial Fat Transfer

Aging results in loss of soft tissue volume of the face and accentuation of the folds around the mouth. Off the shelf fillers are nonsurgical ways to replace the volume and improve the folds but have a limited longevity. Fat transfer involves harvesting your own body’s fat, washing and filtering the fat, and then injecting the fat into the face.
Treatment overview
Loss of soft tissue volume and deepening of folds in the face are addressed with fillers. “Off the shelf” fillers have both the advantage and limitation of lasting a defined period of time, often anywhere from 6-24 months. Fat transfer is the use of your own body’s filler and has the potential to last longer. Think of the fat harvested as a “seed” and the face as the “soil”. In this analogy, the seeds that are planted into the soil that “take” can provide long-lasting facial rejuvenation.

How it Works
The Consultation
At RL Center for Cosmetic Surgery & Medspa, each initial patient consultation is different. Depending on your needs, desired treatments, areas of concern, and simply who you are as a patient, we will schedule you with an actual treatment provider to discuss your goals, budget, and more. During this appointment, we will go through before & after photos, your medical history, and any questions you might have. Only then can we make a recommendation for which procedures or treatments may be right for you and why. We will be sure to educate you on how the treatments work, including what to expect during and afterward.
We charge $100 for surgical consultations that last about 40 minutes. At the end of your consultation, you will leave our office in Vernon Hills with a thorough, personalized treatment plan. And when you’re ready, we’ll schedule your surgery for a day and time that works for your schedule.
The Procedure
Fat transfer can be performed under local anesthesia as an outpatient procedure, meaning you will go home the same day.
Typically, fat is harvested from the lower abdomen or thighs by liposuction with a special small cannula attached to a syringe. After hand-harvesting the fat, the fat is washed and filtered to capture the best “seeds” for the transfer. The face is anesthetized with nerve blocks and the fat is injected into the face using blunt cannulas. Care is taken to assure an even placement of the fat. The fat can be placed in the cheeks, tear-trough, temples, lips, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, chin, glabella, forehead or any areas of soft-tissue deficit.
There will be swelling that will improve over days to weeks and usually it takes about 6 weeks to know how much fat takes for the long term.
The Recovery
Immediately following the procedure, you will be placed in a compression garment to deter excess swelling and for optimal healing. Although each patient is given individual instructions for recovery care, we require ample rest in order to promote healing and comfort. Your surgeon will expect to see you within 24-48 hours following the surgery in order to ensure your healing is on track for the best results.
